The all-new Test of Written Spelling–Sixth Edition (TWS-6) is an accurate and efficient instrument that uses a dictated-word format to assess spelling skills in school-age children and adolescents. It has two forms, Form A and Form B, and each form contains 50 spelling words drawn from eight basal spelling series and graded word lists. The TWS-6 provides percentiles, standard scores, age and grade equivalents.
The results of the TWS-6 can be used for three specific purposes: to identify students whose scores are significantly below those of their peers and who might need interventions designed to improve spelling proficiency, to document overall progress in spelling due to intervention programs, and to serve as a measure for research efforts designed to investigate spelling.
The test’s norms are based on an all-new sample of 1,606 students from 421 different zip codes. Extensive studies of the floors, ceilings, and item gradients for the TWS-6’s standard scores indicate the test is a consistently excellent measure of spelling proficiency across all age and ability levels. Studies of reliability and validity indicate that the TWS-6 is a highly reliable and valid measure of spelling ability. These studies also indicate that the TWS-6’s internal structure is sound, and its results are valid for a wide variety of subgroups, as well as for the general population.
Access to the all-new TWS-6 Online Administration, Scoring, and Report System is included with the purchase of each TWS-6 Complete Kit and with the purchase of every replacement pack of Student Response Forms. This scoring and reporting system is a quick, efficient tool for (a) online administration of the test; (b) entering test session results from a paper administration; (c) converting item scores or total raw scores into age or grade equivalents, percentile ranks, standard scores, and upper and lower confidence intervals; and (d) obtaining a standard summary report. Inclusion of the software eliminates the need to include normative tables in the Examiner’s Manual and ensures accurate calculation of scores.
