Description
Switch accessible and just like the Print Edition
The PCI Reading Program Level Two Software maintains the content and approach from the successful print version, including the program features of repetition, practice, and praise. The software can be used alone or in conjunction with the print materials. The software is accessible for students who are single-switch and scan, touch screen, or mouse users. The activities and lessons in Level Two reflect an ocean resort theme. A teenage Reading Buddy helps guide the student through the activities, offering assistance and encouragement. The reward activities include body boarding, riding a watercraft, fishing, whale watching, and more.
How It Works
The software follows the lesson cycle of the print program and automatically advances the student to the next appropriate activity. The student learns to read 140 new words and gets to read a controlled vocabulary book after each set of ten words learned. After completing all the activities for one word and after each Posttest, a student is given access to the library, which is a place where the student can make independent choices. The student can view the certificates he or she has earned, monitor the growth of the Word Wall as he or she advances through the program, select books to read, and play a word-matching game.
Accessibility Features
There are four different categories of student settings in the software: Time, Audio, Lesson, and Accessibility. These include the ability to set the scanning size, color, and speed; change the font size; have verbal cues repeated; and turn off sound effects.
Individualized Instruction
The software offers a variety of settings that allow the teacher to customize features for each individual student or for an entire class. A teacher may select specific Building Reading Skills for each student. At any time, the teacher may select a particular lesson for the student to review. In addition, the software will suggest a recommended sequence of review activities for each word missed on a Posttest. The teacher can follow the recommendation or create a customized review based on the student's specific needs.
Assessments
The PCI Level Two Software offers formative and summative assessments. The teacher can enter scores and anecdotal notes for PCI Reading Program activities that are completed away from the computer. The scores can then be reviewed or printed out for use in parent conferences or for Adequate Yearly Progress reports. A teacher may also choose to periodically generate parent letters that communicate a student's program progress.
